Essential Eyelash Extension Aftercare: 7 Golden Rules for Maximum Retention

Investing in a fresh set of lash extensions gives you that instant confidence boost. But the key to keeping them looking fluffy, clean, and intact for 4 to 6 weeks lies entirely in your daily aftercare routine.

Improper care can lead to premature shedding, tangled fans, and even bacterial irritation. To help you protect your investment, we’ve distilled lash aftercare down to the 7 essential golden rules.

Rule 1: Wash Your Lashes Daily with a Specially Formulated Cleanser

One of the biggest misconceptions in lash care is that you shouldn’t get your extensions wet. In reality, washing your lashes with an oil-free, lash-safe foam shampoo is crucial! It removes natural skin oils, dead skin cells, makeup residue, and airborne debris that break down the adhesive bond.

Rule 2: Steer Clear of All Oil-Based Skincare Around the Eyes

Mineral oils, facial oils, and oil-based micellar water are the natural enemies of cyanoacrylate (lash glue). Always inspect your cleansers, eye creams, and sunscreens to ensure they are 100% oil-free.

Rule 3: Brush Once or Twice a Day (When Dry Only!)

Use a clean spoolie wand to gently roll through the tips of your extensions to separate any crossed fibers. Never brush wet lashes, as hair and adhesive are at their most vulnerable when damp. Pat them dry with a lint-free towel first.

Pro Tip: Always brush from the middle to the tips with a downward roll, never tug from the lash base!

Rule 4: Sleep on Your Back or Use a Silk Pillowcase

Sleeping face-down in cotton pillowcases causes friction that bends extensions and pulls them out prematurely. Switching to a 100% mulberry silk pillowcase or a contoured 3D eye sleep mask prevents snagging.

Rule 5: No Waterproof Makeup or Traditional Mascara

Applying mascara onto extensions causes clumps and requires vigorous rubbing to remove. If you want darker bottom lashes, use water-soluble, extension-safe formulated mascara only.

Rule 6: Resist the Urge to Pick, Rub, or Pull

When an extension grows out, pulling it out will pluck your natural lash follicle right with it. If a lash feels out of place, brush it into alignment or visit your technician for a quick 10-minute touch-up.

Rule 7: Book Infill Appointments Every 2-3 Weeks

Natural lashes shed between 2 to 5 lashes per day as part of their natural growth cycle. Regular refills replace outgrown lashes, keeping your lash line full, balanced, and healthy.
